Torna Fort – A Historic Marvel Just 4 km from Hazy Bight Resort

29-Aug-2025

Perched at an impressive 1,403 meters (4,603 feet) above sea level, Torna Fort, also known as Prachandagad, is one of the most iconic hill forts of Maharashtra. Known for its grandeur, history, and scenic beauty, it holds a special place in the hearts of adventure seekers and history enthusiasts.

The best part? Torna Fort is located just 4 km from Hazy Bight Resort, making it a must-visit destination for our guests who wish to blend comfort, history, and adventure into their getaway.

A Glimpse into History

Torna Fort is legendary as the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1646 when he was just 16 years old. This victory marked the beginning of the great Maratha Empire and the foundation of Hindavi Swarajya.

Originally built in the 13th century during the reign of the Shah dynasty, the fort later came under the Adil Shahi rulers before being seized by Shivaji Maharaj. Though it briefly fell under Mughal control after the Treaty of Purandar (1665), it was soon reclaimed by the Marathas.

Even today, the fort stands tall as a symbol of Maratha pride, resilience, and glory.

Architectural Wonders

Exploring Torna Fort is like stepping back into the past. The fort is vast and dotted with fascinating structures, including:

  • Bini Darwaza & Kothi Darwaza – the grand entrances.

  • Zunjar Machi & Budhla Machi – fortified outposts offering breathtaking views of the Sahyadris.

  • Menghai Goddess Temple – a sacred temple where trekkers often rest.

  • Ancient reservoirs – like Toranjai Lake, that once sustained life on the fort.

Each corner of the fort tells stories of battles, courage, and heritage.

The Trekking Experience

For adventure lovers staying at Hazy Bight Resort, Torna Fort offers one of the most rewarding treks in Maharashtra.

  • Starting Point: Velhe village (close to the resort).

  • Trek Duration: Around 3–4 hours.

  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging.

The climb takes you through rocky ridges, misty trails, and lush valleys, especially during monsoon. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Rajgad, Raigad, Lingana, and Sinhagad forts.
